Women prisoners of the regime

Today we are talking about women who were imprisoned for political reasons.

We now know about 2990 people, deprived of their liberty on political grounds. 266 of them are women. We know the names of 238 of them, 28 names remain unknown.

There are 72 women on our lists of political prisoners: 53 on the general list and 19 on the religious list.

We do not have exhaustive data on all politically motivated persecutions in Russia, but what we have gives an idea of how repression in Russia has changed in recent years.

Key findings:

  • Since the start of Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine, politically motivated repression of women has increased, and the proportion of women among victims of politically motivated persecution has gone up.
  • Russian authorities have become less tolerant of women. The number of sentences to prison terms has increased.
  • Repression has become broader: more and more diverse women find themselves victims of the regime.

From the report you will learn:

  • Our estimate of the number of women imprisoned for political reasons;
  • What charges women from Russia and the occupied territories of Ukraine are being sent to prison on;
  • What difficulties women face in detention;

All of this is based on real women’s experience whose stories many people have never heard of.

Unfortunately, we don’t know many of the names and details of the cases of women who are imprisoned, but we know that each of them needs your support.

You can join the fundraiser we have launched in favour of female prisoners of the regime.
