Gimaliev Marsel Minehalimovich, born May 5, 1981. Resident of Kazan. Higher education, worked as a legal adviser at Vkusnoteev Confectionary Factory LLC. Married, has a child. Previously, he headed the Nova Regional Human Rights Center, founded in 2005 to protect the rights of Muslims.
As a member of the banned organisation Hizb ut-Tahrir al-Islami, which, even according to the investigation, did not participate in violent actions, he was sentenced under Part 1 of Article 205.5 ("Organisation of the activities of a terrorist organisation"), Part 1 of Article 205.1 ("Assistance to terrorist activity") of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation to 17 years in a strict regime penal colony.
He was under house arrest from March 14 to October 31, 2017, when he escaped from custody. He was detained again on February 21, 2020 and sent to a pre-trial detention facility.
